Embassy of the Republic of Korea to Canada

Since my credentials were formally presented on November 23, 2022, I have had the privilege and honour to represent the Republic of Korea as the Korean Ambassador to Canada. 

Canada dispatched 26,791 soldiers to serve in the Korean War, the third-largest contribution only next to the United States and Britain. Today, Korea and Canada are close partners that share many important values such as democracy, freedom and human rights. People-to-people exchange has continued to grow, making Canada the second most popular destination for Koreans emigrating to another country and the fifth most attractive destination for Korean students abroad. Canada is also home to some 240,000 people of Korean descent, the world’s fourth largest Korean diaspora.

In the years since the establishment of Korea-Canada diplomatic ties in 1963, our relationship has developed rapidly. In 2014, a bilateral free trade agreement was signed, and our relationship was elevated to a “strategic partnership.” In September 2022, it was further upgraded to a “comprehensive strategic partnership” on the occasion of the summit meeting between President Yoon Suk Yeol and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. As this year marks the 60th anniversary of Korea-Canada diplomatic relations, the Korean Embassy remains committed to the further enhancement of our future-oriented and constructive relationship.

The launch of the comprehensive strategic relationship would not have been possible without the support and dedication of the Korean community. I’d like to take this opportunity to offer my heartfelt gratitude to our fellow citizens and Korean Canadians. The Embassy will continue to closely communicate with you all and support your connection to Korean heritage that leads to Canada’s strength in diversity.
